“Well, are you going to give me a straight answer or just stand there with your mouths wide open?” Tori asked, stretching her paws out in front of her. “Because I don’t have all day here. I’m scheduled for another nap soon.” I just stared at her, not knowing what to say or do. ‘My cat can talk….okay, this is just way too much for me,’ I thought, blinking to make sure I wasn’t going crazy.
She yawned, her eyes holding an “I’m waiting” look. That’s when Damien spoke up. “Yes, we do know now.”
“Good. Now I can train you , Jimena. But, you are going to have to leave,” she said, staring right at Damien.
“Why do I have to leave?” he asked, getting defensive.
“You don’t possess the power. So, there is no point in having you around, disturbing our lessons,” Tori said. She held an air of authority to her.
“Umm, about that…..,” I began.
“What child?” she asked, turning her attention towards me.
“He has the gift, too,” I said quietly, looking down at the floor.
“What?! How did you manage that?!” she shouted,  standing on all fours, ready to pounce.
“Well, he was trying to help me open the box….and I forgot that he wasn’t supposed to touch the box…..and he was. So, when the box opened, the magic passed on into both of us….,” I said, breaking off. Tori looked enraged. She jumped off the bed and began to pace around the floor, talking to herself. “This was not what I was told to be doing! I can’t train two witches at once. They both need extensive training in other areas! Hmm, who can I talk to that can help me with this?” Tori said out loud.
“Tori?” I asked cautiously. “What do you mean by extensive training?”
“Huh? Oh. I will get into that later. First, I need to get to the other world and talk to the Howlman. He will know what to do with you two,” she said, heading over to one of the books that we left at the foot of my bed. She used her nose to nudge it open and flip through the pages. Damien looked at me with a confused expression and all I could do was shrug.
“Ah ha!” she said, calling us over. “You two will do this spell together.”
“What kind of spell is this?” Damien asked, reading it over.
“It’s a traveling spell. All you have to do is name the place you need to go to and just simply wish for it. But, it takes a lot of magic to conjure it. You have to be able to connect with each other and bind your magic  if you want it to fully work.”
“Is there an easier spell?” I asked, curious to see if there was anyway that we didn’t have to put so much effort into it.
“There is, but you need lots of practice before you can master it. Or you could always use a candelabara.  It’s a candle stick that you can light and it can bring you any where if you focus on that place.”
I thought about all of this and finally came up with a decision. “Okay. We will go, but you must promise that we will be back in time,” I said, crossing my arms and give her my bravest look. She just looked at me and rolled her eyes.
“I guess I’m going to have to teach you time, too. In Lanamaris, three whole days is like 3 hours here. So, we have all the time in the world and your Aunt will never suspect anything.”
“Okay,” I said, sighing with relief. ‘Well, that’s off my mind now,’ I thought.
‘Yeah, well there is some more factors we need to think of,’ Damien said to me in my mind.
‘Like what?’ I asked, a little annoyed
‘Like how we know nothing of this Lanamaris, place,’ he said back, anger flaring. I could feel something around the edges of his mind, that he tried to keep hidden.
‘Well, it’s only for awhile. We will be back sooner than you know it,’ I said
‘Fine,’ he grumbled back.
“Are you two ready?” Tori asked, growing impatient.
“Yes,” I responded, an excitement building up in me. I took Damien’s hand, as it instructed to do in the book. Then, I connected my mind with Damien’s, feeling his anger swelling up inside of him. ‘Calm down,’ I persuaded. ‘You need to focus.’ I felt his anger cease, but a little still hung close. Finally, though, we had connected and I knew we were ready to make the wish.
In unison, we both said, “We wish to open the door to Lanamaris.” I felt something grow from my fingertips, a power that twined around my arms and hands, becoming stronger within seconds. This new sensation struck my arms and it spread throughout my body. A small whirring noise could be heard as the room fell away from us. I opened my eyes to find ourselves draped in darkness. The only light I could see was coming from the large wooden door before us.
“That’s Lanamaris,” Tori said. I jumped as her voice echoed throughout the entire black vast surrounding us. “Go on, open it,” she said, encouraging me on. I stepped closer to the door and reached my hand out for the handle. With anticipation filling me up inside, I just had to know what was beyond this door. Finally, I turned the knob and opened the large heavy piece of wood that separated me from what was to happen next. What came into view beyond that was a world more enchanting than my own.
Damien followed me through the door, Tori now leading the way. As soon as we were all inside, the door closed itself and seemed to dissolve into the atmosphere. I looked around. A forest that seemed to be taller than sky scrapers, bent their branches up to the sky. Flowers, as tall as men, grew all around us. It seemed as if we were in a dandelion field that belonged to giants. The sky, only visible through the leaves that casted shadows all around, was a fiery red. With a silver sun that tried to shine through the small spaces between the leaves.
My eyes were glued to everything. Wanting to take every little detail and capture it in my mind. I looked at Damien to see if he was enjoying this as much as I was. He seemed unimpressed with it all and asked if we could all press on.
“Do we have to continue on? I think I like it here,” I said, looking around at the giant plants that grew all over the area.
“Well, unless you want to be crushed by a giant, then yes, I would consider moving on,” Tori said, gracefully moving past Damien’s legs. She stopped to turn and look back at me. “Well, come on now, you don’t want to stay in the Giant’s land forever. There is still much more to see.” I sighed, taking one last look around and began to follow after.
